The surface dressing process is as follows:
- Clean and dry road is sprayed with appropriate rate of bitumen
binder
- High quality stone chippings of the appropriate size are spread
- The surface is rolled ideally with Pneumatic tyred, multi-wheeled
rollers to embed the chippings
- Traffic use road at reduced speed
- Road back swept to remove any loose stone chippings
Reasons for Surface Dressing
- To seal the road surface against ingress of water
- To arrest the deterioration of the road surface
- To provide a skid resistant road surface with the resultant
benefits of reduction in accidents
- To reduce spray
Due to the properties of Bitumen successful surface dressing requires
warm dry weather, and as a result work is carried out from May
to July. |
