The surface dressing process is as follows:

  • Clean and dry road is sprayed with appropriate rate of bitumen binder

  • The surface is rolled ideally with Pneumatic tyred, multi-wheeled rollers to embed the chippings
  • Traffic use road at reduced speed
  • Road back swept to remove any loose stone chippings

Reasons for Surface Dressing

  • To seal the road surface against ingress of water
  • To arrest the deterioration of the road surface
  • To provide a skid resistant road surface with the resultant benefits of reduction in accidents
  • To reduce spray

Due to the properties of Bitumen successful surface dressing requires warm dry weather, and as a result work is carried out from May to July.
