- New Hazardous Waste Regulations – Are you Compliant?
McQuillan Envirocare, held a half day seminar on the 30th November
2004 at the Ramada Hotel, Belfast, aimed at educating local industry
on recent and forthcoming changes to the Special/Hazardous Waste
Regulations .
Allison Townley of the Environment & Heritage Service, Special
Waste Section opened the event by giving a brief overview of the
forthcoming Hazardous Waste regulations, which will apply stricter
controls on the movement of hazardous waste and see many more waste
types re-classified.
Further detail on the exact changes to the classifications were
then described by Nigel Naisbitt of Enviros, who explained the
new ‘absolute’ and ‘mirror’ entries which
have changed the hazardous threshold concentrations and make classification
of waste more difficult.
Delegates were also given information on their legal responsibility
with regard to the storage and transport of hazardous wastes and
on the final disposal options now available.
Following the introduction of the Landfill Directive in July 2004,
Northern Ireland has no hazardous waste landfill facility at all.
The new waste classifications will also see the quantity of local
hazardous waste arising increase significantly. Companies will
therefore have to look more closely at how they classify, manage
and dispose of their waste.
Information on the regulations and the correct assessment and
classification of your waste is available by contacting a member
of the Envirocare team on 028 9446 6708.
